James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media:
Adele made music sales history for the second week in a row, notching 1.11 million pure album sales for 25. This makes her the first artist to top 1 million copies in two different weeks since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991. The extraordinary feat easily places her at #1 on both the Billboard 200 and BuzzAngle Music charts and cements 25’s status as the best-selling album since 2011 (when Adele’s 21 reigned) with 4.49 million total album equivalent units moved in only two weeks. Next week will see some serious competition arrive in the form of Coldplay’s A Head Full of Dreams, and we look forward to seeing who will end up in the top spot. Regardless, 25’s monumental performance is igniting music sales during the massively important holiday season, and we are thrilled to see other big-name artists keep the momentum going.
Music Biz would also like to send our congratulations to this year’s GRAMMY nominees, including our Music Biz 2015 and 2016 Breakthrough Artist Award winners Meghan Trainor and Sam Hunt, who are both up for Best New Artist. We wish them and all the other nominees the best of luck and can’t wait for Music’s Biggest Night!
