Lin_AnnieComposition of a Composition: Data Challenges, Strategies, and Best Practices In the Global Publishing Environment
Monday, May 16th • 1:50 – 2:40PM

Annie Lin is Senior Counsel at Loudr, a company that builds products and services that make it easy for content creators, aggregators, and digital music services to identify, track, and pay music publishers. As Loudr’s attorney, Lin addresses complex issues relating to digital music rights, music publishing, copyright licensing, metadata management, and music technology. Prior to joining Loudr, Lin helped launch and expand The Orchard’s rights and licensing business as its creative licensing director. While in private practice, she also served as production counsel for numerous film and television projects, and external counsel for early and mid-stage entertainment, media, and technology companies.

What is your take on the current state of the music industry? What could be improved, and how can we do that?

It’s difficult to pin down the direction of an entire industry, but I can observe two simultaneous trends in digital music: an attempt to retain and monetize what can still be monetized in a very fragmented space, and also an attempt to grab market share (and equity) in emerging areas.

Which Music Biz 2016 event are you most looking forward to?

My company Loudr helps its clients secure licenses from and pays royalties to music publishers who, in some cases, also happen to be songwriters. Because of our close and continuous work in the mechanical administration space, I’m really looking forward to hearing publisher feedback on recent developments in music licensing at the Songwriter & Music Publisher Town Hall. I’m also looking forward to seeing some familiar faces — and perhaps hearing some proper country music in downtown Nashville.

What was the best concert you attended in 2015?

Darwin Deez at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, via Lucky Number Music. I didn’t know much more about the artist than a quirky single (“Radar Detector”) that the music blog rounds a few years ago, so I was surprised and delighted to discover that Darwin Deez is actually a group of math rock guitar gods masquerading as an indie pop band. These guys pair blistering guitar solos with earnest, winsome lyrics and synchronized Napoleon Dynamite-style dance routines between songs. Really strange and wonderful stuff.
