James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media:
“The Billboard and BuzzAngle Music charts got a fresh look this week, with five new albums making an appearance in the charts’ upper rungs, and Adele reaching yet another major milestone. It all begins with Rihanna, whose new album ANTI topped the charts with 166,000 album equivalent units (124,000 in traditional sales). Every single one of Rihanna’s eight albums have now reached the Top 10, a truly remarkable feat. Other high-charting new releases included Kevin Gates’ Islah, Sia’s This Is Acting, Charlie Puth’s Nine Track Mind, and Dream Theater’s The Astonishing. Meanwhile, Adele notched another in an already impressive string of accomplishments by officially passing the 8-million-albums-sold mark with 25. It’s only the sixth album to do so since 2001, joining major records from Usher, 50 Cent, Norah Jones, and Eminem in that ultra-exclusive club. Next week, we’ll be looking to see how the impact of the Super Bowl halftime show will translate for Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.”
