James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media:
Music fans paid tribute to David Bowie last week in the best way possible: by listening to his music. Not only did his new album, Blackstar, top both the Nielsen and BuzzAngle Music charts with 181,000 album equivalent units (including 174,000 in traditional album sales), but his 2002 greatest hits collection, Best of Bowie, also returned to the Top 10, landing at #4 on both tallies. It’s the first time Bowie has scored a #1 album in his career, not to mention his biggest sales week since Nielsen began tracking point-of-sale transactions in 1991. It’s a perfect tribute to a true innovator whose influence on nearly every genre of music cannot be overstated.
