James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media:
What more can be said about Adele’s massive year-end chart reign? This week, we learned that the answer is plenty, as she continues to sell copies of 25 at a furious pace. This week, the album moved 825,000 album equivalent units (including 790,000 in pure album sales) to top the Billboard 200 and BuzzAngle Music charts for a fourth week. It also seals up 25’s status as the best-selling album in the U.S. since Adele’s 21 in 2011 as well as the best-selling album of any calendar year since 2004. And if that’s not enough, it’s also the first record to sell more than 695,000 copies in four different weeks since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking in 1991. This is all fantastic news for the industry, as renewed interest in music as a gift this year thanks to Adele’s accomplishments could lead to sales boosts across the board. And with last-minute holiday shopping now in full swing, we would not be surprised to see another million-selling week for 25.
