James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media:

AdeleAdele’s reign atop the Nielsen SoundScan and BuzzAngle Music charts continued this week, with 25 moving another 728,000 album equivalent units (695,000 in pure album sales) to push its three-week total to 5.19 million. It’s the first time since Nielsen sales tracking began in 1991 that an album has sold more than 650,000 copies in its first three weeks and only the 11th album since 2005 to reach 5 million units sold. There were also a variety of other high-performing debuts this week, with Coldplay scoring their sixth straight Top 5 record on the Billboard 200 with A Head Full of Dreams, reaching #2 on both the Nielsen and BuzzAngle charts. Hip-Hop artists G-Eazy and Rick Ross as well as singer/songwriter, actor, and YouTube star Troye Sivan also reached the Top 10 on both tallies. Moving forward, we will be watching intently to see whether last-minute holiday shopping, not to mention Adele’s Live in New York City TV concert special tonight on NBC, will push 25’s sales over the 6 million mark before New Year’s Day.
