The release of Adele’s 25 was an event of monumental proportions around the world. An unprecedented success in US recorded music history, it garnered total album sales volume of more than 3.3 million in its first week. Nielsen reports that 25 handily broke the existing single-week 2.4 million album sales record set by N’Sync in March 2000, and is the first album to sell more than 3 million copies in a week in Soundscan history (which dates back to 1991). BuzzAngle Music provided a further breakdown of 25’s sales profile, noting that digital album downloads and physical sales were almost evenly split, at 49% and 51% respectively. We also saw Adele’s two previous albums — 21 and 19 — receive big sales bumps from the prior week. In the end, Adele was single-handedly responsible for an astronomical share of overall US album sales volume for the week. Say what you will, but this extraordinary achievement is an affirmation that there is indeed a market for a unique collection of great music, a work of art that captures a moment in time…for all time.
