Metadata is Money: Helping Artists Manage Their Music’s Identity
Tuesday, May 17 • 11 AM – 12:30 PM
Kristin Thomson is a consultant for the US-based, non-profit Future of Music Coalition (FMC), which advocates for musicians. She co-directs FMC’s Artist Revenue Streams research project, which is examining changes in musicians’ sources of income. She is also co-owner of Simple Machines, an independent record label, which released over 70 records and CDs from 1991-1998, and played guitar in the band Tsunami.
What’s the first record you ever bought?
The first record I ever bought (with my own money) was The B-52’s 1979 self titled release. The album with the yellow cover that said “PLAY LOUD” on the record labels.
What was the best concert you attended in 2015?
The best concert I attended in 2015 was Kraftwerk’s spectacular 3D show at the Electric Factory in Philly. In 2016, the highlight to date has been Protomartyr, and I’m looking forward to seeing Savages and Courtney Barnett in the next few months.
What’s the best artist you’ve discovered over the past year?
I listen to college radio a lot (WZBT Gettysburg, PA!), which means I’m constantly hearing new bands and artists. Already this year, the station has introduced me to Lucy Dacus and her charming song “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore”, but there’s plenty more interesting stuff happening these days.
What can we expect from the panel you are participating in?
I’m delighted to be part of Metadata is Money: Helping Artists Manage their Music’s Identity on Tuesday, May 17. We will provide session attendees with practical information about music metadata, not only what all these numbers are, but how they power today’s music ecosystem and are responsible for attribution, discovery and compensation. We’ll talk about where to get these numbers, how to keep track of them, and the places the numbers need to be logged in to ensure that they work.
