James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), commented on this week’s sales numbers issued by Nielsen (published in Billboard) and Border City Media:
It was a big week for Hip-Hop on the Nielsen and BuzzAngle Music charts, with Kendrick Lamar’s Untitled Unmastered ruling both tallies after moving 178,000 album equivalent units (including 142,000 in traditional album sales). It’s the second chart-topper from Lamar, following the 5-time GRAMMY winning album To Pimp a Butterfly, and his second #1 within a year’s time. This marks the third time since January 2015 that an artist has topped the charts twice within 12 months, and all three are Hip-Hop artists, with Drake and Future accounting for the other two. As if that wasn’t enough, fellow rapper 2 Chainz also scored his third straight Top 5 album with ColleGrove, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on BuzzAngle Music. Other high-ranking debuts include Granger Smith’s Remington and Ray LaMontagne’s Ouroboros, which both reached the Top 10 on the BuzzAngle chart.
